Vigils and a march were held yesterday in honour of Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was assassinated on the 16th of October 2017.

The vigil started in Bidnija, where the car bomb that killed the journalist went off, with loved ones and demonstrators gathering to lay flowers, offer minutes of silence and recount Daphne’s legacy.

A subsequent march and vigil in Valletta continued the honouring of the late journalist, with various organisations calling for the delayed justice to take place and for further protections for journalists.

‘Eight years. Hard to believe it’s been that long’, wrote photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi. ‘I remember that day as clearly as if it were today — the shock, the horror, the maelstrom of emotions I had to suppress as I forced myself into professional mode to keep it together while covering the heinous murder of my cousin, Daphne Caruana Galizia.’

‘And today, seeing the grandchildren she never knew — children born after her murder — laying flowers at the site as they reach the age where they can begin to understand why they never got to know their grandmother… it’s a moment that cuts deep.’
