Vanessa Frazier, Senior Maltese Diplomat, has been appointed the United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict (UN SRSG).

Frazier expressed her gratitude on social media, stating, “I’m truly honoured to be appointed to this very important position and to continue advocating and working for child protection. I thank the Government of Malta who has always supported me throughout my career. I thank every Maltese diplomat who as part of my team helped me along the way. I didn’t achieve anything alone. I hope to keep bringing honour to Malta in this new role.”

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg also congratulated Frazier on X, highlighting the significance of her appointment: “Malta is proud to see one of our own take on this vital role in protecting children’s rights. A historical first for #Malta. Grateful to Virginia Gamba for her dedicated service and commitment over the past 8 years.”

Frazier’s appointment marks a major step for Malta on the global stage, reflecting her longstanding dedication to diplomacy and child protection.

She succeeds Virginia Gamba, whose eight years of service at the UN underscored the importance of safeguarding children in conflict zones.

In her new role, Frazier will continue advocating for the rights and protection of children affected by armed conflict worldwide, bringing Maltese expertise and commitment to an international platform.

An official statement by the UN from the office of Antonio Guterres, secretary general, said Frazier “brings multilateral diplomatic expertise, crisis management skills, consensus building and dedication to child protection, with ability to navigate complex global negotiations and broker agreements among diverse stakeholders.”
