Valletta Event To Bring Music & Community Together In Support Of Cancer Research
A free public event bringing together music, community and cancer awareness will take place tomorrow, 24 September, at St George's Square in Valletta as part of the Show Your Face campaign organised by the Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta (CRIHM) to mark World Cancer Research Day.
Beginning at 6:00pm, the event forms part of a two-month national campaign aimed at raising awareness about cancer research, prevention and innovation, while highlighting the work of researchers, NGOs and organisations dedicated to improving cancer care and treatment.
Researchers, patients, families, NGOs and members of the public will come together for an evening of live entertainment and activities designed to promote hope, solidarity and support for cancer research.
Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima said the initiative seeks to bring research closer to the public and encourage more open conversations about cancer.
He said people should not be afraid to talk about the disease, stressing the importance of prevention, research and innovation while continuing to offer hope to those living with cancer and their families. He added that today's research has the potential to improve tomorrow's prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Grima also highlighted the Government's continued investment in the sector, noting that more than €3 million has been allocated to 10 cancer research projects through CRIHM. He added that a further €1.2 million funding call for four new cancer research projects, in collaboration with Xjenza Malta, will be launched in the coming days.
According to the Minister, the investment forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen medical technology, science, research and innovation while creating greater opportunities for Maltese researchers to contribute to international scientific advances.
During the evening, attendees will be invited to take part in an attempt to set a national record by forming a human cancer awareness ribbon.
The programme will also feature performances by Jon and Jo from S Club, Bianca Muniz, Destiny, Kurt Calleja and Sarah Bonnici, as well as the debut performance of the original campaign song, TAMA.
Visitors will also find NGOs, a children's area and CRIHM's Mobile Health Unit, which will provide free health checks throughout the event.
