Upward Lightning Caught On Footage From This Week's Storm
Environment

This past week saw a heavy thunder and hail storm hit the Maltese islands, and with that usually comes stunning views of lightning strikes all across the island.

One of these, captured by Xavier Cremona and shared with It-Temp Madwarna Facebook weather page on 4th December, shows an upward lightning strike.

The weather page explained that the phenomenon needs really tall structures like skyscrapers, radio towers or church steeples.

If enough charge is built up on the structure, as it does in the atmosphere when lightning strikes happen downwards, the top of the structure sends a spark upwards to ‘join’ the cloud and discharge the excessive electricity.
