New figures tabled in Parliament have shed further light on the current composition of Malta’s prison population.

The information emerged through a series of parliamentary questions addressed to Byron Camilleri by MPs Albert Buttigieg and Graziella Attard Previ.

In his reply, the Minister confirmed that 68 women are currently serving sentences at the Corradino Correctional Facility, Malta’s main prison.

Earlier data presented in Parliament indicated that the total prison population stood at 727 inmates in 2025.

This places the proportion of female prisoners at approximately 9.35%.

The figures also reveal a significant number of foreign nationals within the prison system. A total of 374 inmates are non-Maltese, accounting for roughly half of the overall prison population.
