Unsafe Children’s Bicycle Recalled From The Maltese Market

Unsafe Children’s Bicycle Recalled From The Maltese Market
Local

The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) wishes to warn the public about serious safety concerns regarding a specific children’s bicycle model, the Sky Everest Venere 12 (Art. No. 2197-PP, Batch No. D210634). This product has been found to pose significant risks to young riders due to critical defects affecting its structural integrity and braking performance.

This bicycle has been recalled from the market after testing revealed that the handlebar may break due to insufficient mechanical strength, which could cause loss of control and result in a fall and injury. Additionally, the bicycle failed to meet required standards for front and rear braking performance. Consequently, this product does not comply with the General Product Safety Regulation nor with the European standard EN 8098.

These tests were carried out as part of the European Commission’s CASP project (Coordinated Activities on the Safety of Products), in which Malta, along with other Member States, tested a range of children’s bicycles. Other products tested included slime toys and electrical items.

Following these findings, the MCCAA has taken the necessary steps to ensure the immediate removal of this product from the local market. Consumers who have purchased this bicycle are advised to stop using it immediately and, if possible, return it to the retailer where it was bought.

Retailers are obliged to compensate consumers either by replacing the unsafe product with a safe one of the same type and value or, if replacement is not possible, by offering a full refund.

Consumers are also reminded to consult the Safety Gate platform at the following link before purchasing products, to check if the item has been recalled:
