The University of Malta has officially opened its Academic Year 2025–2026, welcoming more than 5,200 new students to its community.

Of these, around 2,400 will embark on undergraduate programmes, while over 2,100 will pursue postgraduate studies. The institution is also hosting 360 Erasmus+ students and 390 Visiting students registered for Micro-credentials.

At Junior College, more than 1,100 new entrants have joined, bringing its total to over 2,100 students.

The Opening Ceremony took place at Sir Temi Zammit Hall, where Rector Professor Alfred J. Vella and KSU President Gerard Zammit Young addressed the new cohort.

Professor Vella reflected on this year’s motto, highlighting the transformative role of higher education in promoting justice, sustainability and peace. He stressed that universities nurture critical thinking, ethical responsibility and global citizenship, providing space for dialogue and collective progress.

Mr Zammit Young encouraged students to seize the opportunity to study, question and shape society for the better.

The ceremony was followed by the launch of KSU Freshers’ Week, which runs from 29 September to 3 October. Students can engage with organisations, enjoy campus activities and meet fellow peers.

Prime Minister Robert Abela and Dr Lydia Abela attended the opening day to hear students’ ambitions.

In total, the University now counts over 12,800 students, including approximately 1,800 international students from 126 countries.
