UNIVERSITY OF MALTA DEBUTS AT THE HAGUE INTER-UNIVERSITY LAW DEBATE TOURNAMENT

For the first time in its history, the University of Malta will be represented at the prestigious Hague Inter-University Law Debate Tournament (THIULDT) 2026. This iconic international competition, running since 2015, brings together law students from across the globe to debate pressing issues in both public and private international law, fostering critical reasoning, intercultural exchange, and practical application of legal knowledge.
The University of Malta’s inaugural team for 2026 features Michael Gatt and Cara Borg Aquilina, under the guidance of coaches Dr Antoine Grima, Prof. Omar Grech, and Prof. Tonio Borg. The team reflects the university’s commitment to academic excellence, international legal dialogue, and the development of advocacy skills.
The competition is divided into two phases: a research and preparation stage, where teams study the announced topics in depth, and a presentation stage, where participants are assigned pro/con positions and must argue persuasively while responding to opposing teams in a time-limited setting.
