Understanding The EU Disability Card: How It Works & Where To Use It

The EU Disability Card is an important tool that helps make everyday life more accessible for persons with disability in Malta.
It is an official document that confirms the card holder as a person with disabilities and allows cardholders to apply for a range of services, schemes and concessions offered by government entities and a growing number of private organisations.
Introduced in Malta in 2015 as part of a European pilot project, the EU Disability Card is also generally recognised in several other EU Member States.

This means Maltese cardholders can generally benefit from various concessions related to cultural, sports and leisure activities when travelling to a number of other EU Member States. Holders of EU Disability Card issued in other EU Member States can generally also use their card when visiting Malta.
It is important to understand that the card does not automatically guarantee access to services or benefits. Each scheme has its own eligibility criteria, and the EU Disability Card is usually one of several requirements. For this reason, cardholders are encouraged to check directly with the relevant organisation before applying or visiting.
Applying for the EU Disability Card is done online at www.eudisabilitycard.org.mt.
Applicants need to submit a recent passport size photo, a medical certificate and any relevant supporting documents. Applications are reviewed by medical assessors, and further information may be requested if needed.
Once approved, the card is issued by Aġenzija Sapport and delivered by post. By understanding how and where the card can be used, both cardholders and the wider public can help build a more inclusive and accessible society.
