Ukraine’s Future Must Be Decided By Ukrainians, Not Russia, Says PN Leader At EPP Summit

Leader of the Opposition and of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), Alex Borg, participated in an Extraordinary Informal Summit of the European People’s Party (EPP), convened by President Manfred Weber. The meeting, held online, focused on the latest developments in the conflict in Ukraine and on reinforcing a united position among the EPP’s member parties.
Among the participants were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, several Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers, as well as Leaders of the Opposition from EPP-affiliated parties across the EU.

The Partit Nazzjonalista reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mr Borg echoed the EPP’s clear message that Ukraine’s future must be determined by Ukrainians themselves, not by Russia. He stressed that this principle must remain central to Europe’s stance and to all diplomatic efforts.
Borg emphasised that the European Union must remain united in its response to the conflict. Political, economic, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine should remain robust to ensure a peace that guarantees long-term security for the Ukrainian people. He warned that instability in Europe directly affects the Mediterranean region and Malta, particularly in terms of resources, migration, and regional security.
The PN and the EPP urged Europe to continue defending the rules-based international order and to resist pressure to accept any agreement that benefits aggressors.
Borg was accompanied at the summit by the PN’s International Secretary, Beppe Galea.
