For the first time in U.S. history, two Black women will serve together in the Senate. Delaware’s Lisa Blunt Rochester and Maryland’s Angela Alsobrooks secured historic wins in the 2024 elections, bringing new representation to Capitol Hill.

Blunt Rochester, formerly a Delaware congresswoman, is now the first Black woman to represent Delaware in the Senate. Angela Alsobrooks, a former county executive and prosecutor, is Maryland’s first Black senator, after a close race against a former Republican governor. In her victory speech, Blunt Rochester honored previous Black women senators Carol Moseley Braun, Kamala Harris, and Laphonza Butler.

Addressing young Americans, she said, “I see you, I’m grateful to you, and you’ve got next.” President Joe Biden congratulated Blunt Rochester, celebrating her historic win in his home state.

Tuesday’s election marked further milestones as Delaware voters also elected Sarah McBride, who will become the first openly trans person in the U.S. House of Representatives. Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks, who call themselves “sister senators-to-be,” celebrated their achievements as a significant moment for progress and representation in U.S. politics.
