Nature Trust Malta shared some devastating news on their social media this week, after a turtle failed to nest twice at local beach Armier after sun bedsobstructed her way.

“On Thursday evening, just past 9pm, we received a call that there was a turtle trying to nest in Armier,” explained the NGO.

They continued to state that by the time a nest coordinator arrived at the scene 5 minutes later, the turtle had already returned to sea.

“Upon analysing the tracks left behind, it was very obvious that the turtle had to detour twice due to sunbeds in her way,” they explained.

Nature Trust along with the Malta Wildlife Rescue Team explained that the turtle attempted to nest twice in one night, but failed both times due to the obstacles on the beach.

They stated that she has not returned to Armier to try again, which points towards her dumping her eggs in the sea.

“We will continue monitoring for the coming nights, but with every night that passes, the chances of her returning reduce.”

The NGO also urged people to flatten sandcastles and fill in any holes dug because they’re not only “a hazard to nesting turtles,” but also “a hazard to humans walking on the beach at night.”
