Tropical Bigfin Squid Recorded In Maltese Waters For The First Time

Marine biologist Alan Deidun and the Spot the Alien citizen science campaign have documented yet another alien species in Maltese waters.
The bigfin squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana), a tropical species native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, was first observed in the Mediterranean in 2002, off the coast of Turkey.
This latest record marks the first confirmed sighting in Malta, highlighting the ongoing spread of non-native marine species in the region.
Deidun expressed his gratitude to local fishers, such as Matthew Gatt, for reporting their observations, and thanked MDPI for supporting the research.
