Vouchers for a nationwide tree planting initiative have begun to be issued to the first group of successful applicants, marking an important step in the project’s rollout.

The initial beneficiaries, who completed the verification process by last week, were invited to collect their trees during the “Family in the Park” event held at Minden Grove in Ta’ Qali. The event brought together families and children, offering them the chance to engage directly with the initiative while also meeting Project Green officials and tree suppliers to learn more about proper care and maintenance.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said the level of interest in the scheme had exceeded expectations. She noted that when the Government first announced plans to plant more than 100,000 trees, it had not anticipated such a strong response. The initiative has now moved into a new phase, with trees being distributed across different parts of Malta and Gozo.

Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, including those with more than one tumolo of land and who applied for over forty five trees, can redeem their vouchers through selected suppliers and receive the trees free of charge. At the start of this week alone, vouchers equivalent to 13,000 trees were issued, with more to follow in the coming weeks as additional applicants complete the process.

The initiative, launched in October 2025, attracted close to 2,000 expressions of interest. Around 900 applicants declared that they had sufficient land to qualify under the main criteria. Those with smaller plots are currently being assessed and are expected to begin receiving vouchers shortly.

By encouraging landowners to plant both productive and non productive trees, the scheme aims to promote sustainable land use, strengthen agroforestry practices and support climate resilience. Applications remain open until the end of next year, with further phases of the project set to expand participation even further.
