Transport Malta Signs Shore Power Agreement With Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings
Local

Transport Malta and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have signed a Shore Power Purchase Agreement allowing the company’s cruise ships to connect to Malta’s electricity grid while berthed in port.

The agreement forms part of Malta’s Shore-to-Ship Project, which allows vessels to use electricity from the shore to power onboard services such as lighting and air conditioning, reducing the need to operate engines while in port.

By connecting directly to the electricity grid, cruise ships can lower emissions produced during their stay, contributing to cleaner air for communities around the port area.

The agreement marks the fourth shore power agreement signed by Transport Malta and further expands the use of Malta’s onshore power infrastructure while strengthening cooperation with cruise operators on reducing the environmental impact of maritime activity.

The agreement was signed by Transport Malta Chief Executive Officer Leonid McKay and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Director of Nautical Operations Cristian Cutugno during the Decarbonising The Future Conference, being held in Malta between 12 and 14 October 2026. The signing was held in the presence of Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett and Harbour Master Capt. Fritz Farrugia.

Bonett said the agreement shows how investment in maritime infrastructure can support both the cruise industry and local communities.

McKay highlighted the importance of cooperation between public authorities and maritime operators in ensuring cleaner technology delivers practical results.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said Malta’s shore power system has become an important part of its future operations as the company continues developing its cruise fleet.
