Too Old To Love? Breaking the Myths of Fostering Teens in Malta

Campaigns highlighting the need for foster families in Malta have become all too common. Despite this, the Fostering Service continues to be inundated with referrals for children and adolescents in need of a loving home.

Younger children often find their families, but unfortunately, it’s not the same story for teenagers. There is a critical shortage of homes willing to take adolescents.

This is rooted in the myth that teenagers in the system are “already set in their ways,” believing they have established values that cannot be changed.

There is also a fear that these older children will be more defiant, rebellious, and refuse to take guidance.

This couldn’t be farther than the truth.

Often, these older children were forced into the role of a caregiver for their siblings or parents. It was their responsibility to make sure there’s food on the table, blankets in winter, and that no one is being harmed.

These teenagers never had a childhood full of love, and they deserve one. It’s never too late.

They deserve a warm, home-cooked meal, a comfortable bed, a safe space, and an adult to guide them through life’s challenges.

Science tells us that the brain continues to develop into our late 20s. This makes the teenage years the perfect time for an adult to step in.

With the right guidance, love, and care, a foster parent can help a teen develop positive relationships and reach their full potential.
