Today We Celebrate World Animal Day!
Local

Every year on 4 October, people around the world celebrate World Animal Day, an international occasion dedicated to raising awareness about animal welfare and recognising the important role animals play in our lives and the natural world.

Observed on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, the day encourages everyone to show a little extra care for pets, wildlife and farm animals alike.

It is also an opportunity to support organisations that work to protect animals and promote responsible treatment.

World Animal Day traces its origins back to 1925, when German writer and publisher Heinrich Zimmermann organised the first celebration. The event continued to grow over the decades, becoming a global movement promoting respect, compassion and conservation.

People can volunteer at a local animal shelter, donate to an animal welfare charity, adopt a rescue animal, or simply spend extra time caring for their own pets.

Others choose to make more animal-friendly purchasing decisions by supporting cruelty-free products or reducing the use of animal-derived goods.

Whether you are a pet owner or simply an animal lover, World Animal Day is a reminder that every small action can make a positive difference.
