Today Is The Summer Solstice: The Longest Day Of The Year
Science

Today marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the point at which the Earth’s North Pole is tilted most directly towards the Sun, bringing the greatest number of daylight hours and signalling the official beginning of summer.

For many people, the summer solstice is a welcome opportunity to enjoy the extended daylight, warmer evenings and outdoor activities.

The solstice has also held cultural and spiritual importance for thousands of years. Ancient monuments such as Stonehenge in England are closely associated with the event, attracting visitors who gather to watch the sunrise and celebrate the changing season.

From tomorrow onwards, the days will gradually begin to shorten again, even as summer continues to bring its warmest weather.
