Today, 2nd November, marks All Souls' Day, a day observed by Catholics around the world, including in Malta, to remember those who have passed away.

Known in Maltese as L-Għid tal-Erwieħ, the day holds a special place in Malta's religious and cultural traditions.

But what exactly is All Souls' Day, and why do we celebrate it?

The tradition dates back centuries and is dedicated to praying for the souls of the departed.

In Malta, many families mark the occasion by visiting cemeteries, placing flowers on the graves of loved ones, lighting candles and spending a moment remembering those they have lost.

All Souls' Day comes immediately after All Saints' Day on 1st November, but the two have different meanings.

While All Saints' Day honours all the saints, All Souls' Day focuses on remembering and praying for those who have died.

The occasion is also connected to one of Malta's most recognisable seasonal treats, Għadam tal-Mejtin, the traditional bone-shaped almond sweets found in bakeries throughout October and November.

Although the day has strong Catholic roots, its message of remembrance extends beyond religion, offering people an opportunity to reflect on the memories and moments shared with those who are no longer here.

Today, we remember all those who may be gone, but will never be forgotten.
