Today is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!

That’s right, the first day of September is also reserved for ginger cats. Not just any coloured feline, but the gingers!

Ginger cats come in five different varieties of coats, which include classic swirl patterns, the striped ‘mackerel’ pattern, the spotted pattern, the patched pattern and the ticked pattern.

All ginger cats are also actually tabby cats, meaning that they have the agouti gene. However, not all tabbies are orange or ginger.

Another fascinating fact is that two ginger parent cats will produce all ginger kittens. And the ginger gene, which produces the orange colour, exists on the X chromosome.

For females to be ginger, they would need two of these ginger X chromosomes, whereas males only need one. This makes female gingers rarer, with a ratio of 1:3.
