Time To Discuss Increasing On-The-Spot Tourist Fines, Says Minister

Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima shared a video discussing the on the spot fines announced recently.
Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield announced that he intends to increase new on-the-spot fines for tourists caught disrupting the public peace or committing offences.
This follows young people who were filmed and caught throwing bottles in Swieqi off roofs. The youth were fined €2,000, amounting to around €166 each.
This prompted the call for increasing the fines as many thought these fines were too low.
Minister Grima said that this was not unexpected as residents living in the zones mostly impacted know exactly what they are experiencing.
The Minister said that this measure gives more capability for disciplined forces to enforce the law. He also acknowledged that the increase in the fines is also a legitimate and necessary discussion.
‘If one carries out these amendments, it’s important to see how they will impact everyone. Everything we do needs to be of benefit to the Maltese and Gozitan citizens.’
