TikToker Breaks Down Maltese-Australian Dialect ‘Maltralian’

A TikTok creator named ‘human1011’ shared a video breaking down the Maltese-Australian dialect known as ‘Maltralian.’

He first broke down the origin of the Maltese language, from its Arabic to post-Norman conquest history. The creator explained how Maltese still retained Arabic influences whilst taking on Romantic ones as well.

However, Maltralian came about due to the massive migration of Maltese people to Australia. As this happened, the language evolved and took on accents and words from Australian English and incorporated them into Maltese.

Maltralian has retained many words that have fallen out of use from standard Maltese, whilst also developing new words like ‘bbażoffja’, coming from ‘buzz off.’

Phonetically, words like opportunita became opporċunita, due to the word opportunity being pronounced with a ‘ch’ sound in Australian.
