Thousands of people have taken to the streets across Serbia in extraordinary scenes of celebration following a historic election result that could mark the end of more than a decade of political rule.

The streets of Belgrade were transformed into a massive celebration on Sunday night, with crowds waving Serbian flags, dancing, chanting and setting off fireworks as cars honked their horns in support.

The celebrations erupted after Serbian leader Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat in the country's parliamentary elections to a student-led opposition movement.

Preliminary projections suggest the Students' List could secure between 135 and 140 seats in Serbia's 250-seat parliament, marking a major political turning point.

The victory follows nearly two years of student-led protests against alleged government corruption and authoritarianism.

The movement began following the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people and sparked widespread demands for accountability.

What began as demonstrations eventually developed into a nationwide political movement calling for change.

With voter turnout reaching nearly 70%, the election reflected widespread public engagement.

For thousands celebrating across Serbia, the result represents more than an electoral victory. It symbolises hope for a new political chapter and a different future for the country.
