This Local Caterpillar Is Ready For Halloween

The Malta Ranger Unit shared a stunning photo a Death’s Head Hawkmoth, known in Maltese as ‘Baħrija ta’ Ras il-Mewt.’

The caterpillar will turn into the largest moth found in the Maltese islands, and is famous for the eerie, skull-like pattern on its back once it goes through metamorphosis.

This rare giant is a master of surprises and can actually emit a loud squeak when startled! Did you know that this powerful long-distance flyer migrates across the Mediterranean from Africa to southern Europe?
