Things Every Maltese Mum Has Said At Least Once

If you grew up in Malta, chances are your mum had a very specific way of speaking.
Somehow, every Maltese mum seems to share the exact same phrases.
Here are some things almost every Maltese mum has definitely said before:
“Ħu ġakketta.”
Even if it’s boiling outside, you’re going somewhere indoors, or you’re only leaving for five minutes. To Maltese mums, wind is a genuine threat.
“Meta tasal għidli.”
And if you forget? Expect missed calls, texts, and at least one dramatic “Qed tinkwetani.”
“Kul qabel toħroġ.”
Even if you already ate. Even if you’re full. Even if you’re literally going out to eat. A Maltese mum believes hunger can strike at any moment.
“Mela ħsibtna ċ-Ċisk?”
Usually triggered by lights left on, long showers, or using the air conditioner for “too long”. Electricity bills were practically part of Maltese family culture.
“Dak mhux ikel.”
Apparently cereal, toast and snacks are not real meals. Proper food must involve sauce, potatoes and enough portions for an entire extended family.
“Meta se ssib xi ħadd?”
A classic question that can appear at weddings, family lunches, during the news, or completely unprovoked.
And despite all the shouting from another room, the worrying, the reminders and the unsolicited advice, we all know life would feel very strange without them.
Because deep down, every Maltese mum says these things for the same reason: love.
