According to information tabled in parliament, there are currently 12,445 valid hunting licenses in Malta.

There are currently 9,004 valid licenses for on-land bird hunting, 293 for hunting while at sea, and 3,148 licenses for wild rabbit hunting.

Despite the amount being 12,445, the amount of hunters is less as one hunter may possess multiple licenses.

Meanwhile, between February and May of this year, there were 47 new applicants for hating licenses. 9,418 renewed their license, and just one of the latter group was a foreign citizen resident in Malta.

During the same period, the Police Weapons Office referred 47 individuals to sit for hunting examinations. 23 were referred for the land bird hunting examination, one for the sea bird hunting exam and 23 for the wild rabbit exam.

‘All of these individuals sat their respective examinations. A total of 18 passed, while 29 either failed or did not attend the examination. These individuals will be invited to resit the examination during the next scheduled session.’

The vetting of applicants is carried out by the Malta Police Force, and all applicants approved by the Police are invited by the Wild Birds Regulation Unit (WBRU) to sit the relevant examination.
