There are currently 3,109 Learning Support Educators (LSEs) and Senior Learning Support Educators (SLSEs working in Malta’s schools, according to information provided by the Ministry for Education in response to parliamentary questions.

The Ministry said that all LSEs who successfully completed the selection process have been employed for the current school year, while recruitment processes for both LSEs and SLSEs remain active and ongoing to ensure students receive the necessary support.

Regarding teaching staff in primary schools, the Ministry said there are currently nine vacant positions. However, it clarified that these vacancies are linked to peripatetic services, meaning the educators do not have a permanent class of their own but instead provide support across different schools during the week.

The Ministry stated that there are no primary school classes without a teacher and that the number of vacancies changes throughout the school year depending on the needs of individual schools. Recruitment processes are continuing to fill available positions as soon as possible.

The Ministry also said that 20 Deputy Head of School positions were undergoing recruitment at the time the parliamentary question was answered. The process had been extended due to appeals submitted during the selection procedure.

It added that the employment conditions of LSEs and SLSEs have improved in recent years, while applications for these roles continue to be accepted throughout the year.
