'The Theft of the Caravaggio': Maltese-Made Mystery Drama Lands at Eden Cinemas December 3rd

One of Malta’s most anticipated films is finally hitting the big screen. The Theft of Caravaggio, directed by local filmmaker Joshua Cassar Gaspar, lands in cinemas on December 3rd: and Maltese cinephiles are buzzing.
The film is inspired by a real crime: the 1984 disappearance of Caravaggio’s St. Jerome Writing from St. John’s Co-Cathedral, but this is not a documentary or historical reenactment. This is a fictional mystery-drama built around a very real unsolved disappearance.
Cassar Gaspar uses the event as a creative springboard, crafting a personal and psychological narrative exploring guilt, consequences and truth, drawing stylistic inspiration from Tarantino’s history-bending Inglourious Basterds.
Cassar Gaspar teamed up with Maltese British cinematographer Dan Cawthorne. One of the film's standout elements is that it is shot entirely on location in Malta and captured exclusively on analogue 35mm film, giving the visuals a textured and richly cinematic quality that digital formats cannot replicate.
The film stars a strong cast of Maltese performers, including Black Mirror's Paul Kissaun, who was nominated for Best Performance at the Mediterrane Film Festiva, Rob Grose, Elektra Anastasi, Peter Galea and Narcy Calamatta.
This also marks the feature film debut of writer–director Joshua Cassar Gaspar, whose recognition is rapidly growing both locally and internationally.
With its local soul, international storytelling and visually rich analogue style, The Theft of Caravaggio represents a major milestone for Maltese cinema and will land at Eden Cinemas on December 3rd.
