"The Sun Did Not Set Yesterday": Local Photographer Captures The Sun In Malta's Dusty Atmosphere

Local photographer Marika Caruana captured an eerie and otherworldly scene over Mdina yesterday evening, as the setting sun appeared to sink into a thick, muddy haze above the Maltese landscape.

Taken around half an hour before the official sunset, the striking photograph shows the sun glowing through the atmospheric haze above the Mdina Cathedral, casting an unusual orange and yellow light across the historic skyline.

The surreal conditions came as a large cloud of Saharan dust swept across the central Mediterranean and Malta, leaving skies noticeably hazy and affecting air quality across the islands.

Algerian wildfires may also have contributed to the atmospheric conditions, with smoke from the fires potentially mixing with the dust.

The unusual skies were not the only spectacle visible overnight. Malta also witnessed a partial lunar eclipse during the early hours of this morning, with the moon taking on a reddish appearance as part of the event.
