The Silent Witnesses: The Impact Of Domestic Violence On Children
Local

Domestic violence leaves deep and lasting scars on children, even when they are not the direct targets of abuse.

Growing up in a home marked by fear, conflict and unpredictability can affect every part of a child’s development. Many children exposed to domestic violence experience anxiety, depression and emotional withdrawal.

Others show signs through behavioural changes, such as aggression, difficulties at school or a sudden loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed.

The constant stress of witnessing harm can disrupt sleep patterns, lead to nightmares and cause physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches.

Importantly, these effects often continue long after the violence stops, shaping the way young people understand trust, safety and relationships.

Some may struggle to form healthy bonds later in life because they have learnt that control or conflict is a normal part of family interaction. Without proper support, these early experiences can influence decision making, emotional resilience and overall wellbeing well into adulthood.

Recognising the impact of domestic violence on children is crucial, as early intervention can help break the cycle and provide a path to healing.

We Have a Dream: A Future without Violence aims to amplify the voices of children experiencing domestic violence while encouraging adult victims to seek help and perpetrators to seek rehabilitation through the Stop! The Violence and Abuse_ perpetrator programme run by Aġenzija Appoġġ.
