The Port Region To Serve As Region Of Culture 2026

The Port Region has been officially selected as the Region of Culture for the coming year, taking over from Gozo, which will conclude its term as Region of Culture 2025 in the weeks ahead.
The title is awarded annually to a different area in Malta, giving each region the chance to showcase its cultural identity through a dedicated programme of events and initiatives.
The announcement was made by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, during an event attended by Port Region Council President Paul Farrugia, Association of Local Councils President Mario Fava and Director General of the Local Government Division Emile Vassallo.
The initiative, now in its fourth year, was created in 2022 to strengthen appreciation for Malta’s cultural and traditional foundations. The Port Region will therefore take the spotlight next year with activities designed to highlight its rich heritage.
In her remarks, Zerafa Civelli described the region as a place with an extraordinary natural harbour, important archaeological sites, enduring fortifications and a wealth of religious and civic architecture.

She stressed that every locality, regardless of size, contributes its own history and values. She also noted the rise in tourism across the area, crediting the efforts of local councils and suggesting that the new title will help further growth while preserving local identity.
During the coming year, cultural events linked to the initiative will be added to the councils’ usual calendars. The Gozo Region was also thanked for delivering a strong and varied programme.
The Port Region is made up of the localities of Birgu, Bormla, Isla, Kalkara, Valletta, Floriana, Xgħajra, Żabbar, Fgura, Paola and Tarxien.
