The Malta Opus Launches at the Maritime Museum

On the 18th of September, the unveiling of The Malta Opus took place at The Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu. This was the first-ever Opus volume dedicated to an entire nation.
Karl Fowler, CEO of Opus, opened the event by welcoming guests and introducing the landmark project, before the symbolic arrival of The Malta Opus edition number 001.Escorted by the Armed Forces of Malta, the volume was delivered in a classic car and ceremoniously placed on stage, a moment that set the tone for the evening.
Owen Bonnici, Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, celebrated The Malta Opus as a “world-first” and a “historic milestone.” He described the publication as a vivid encapsulation of “our history, our culture, our identity, and above all, our people,” describing it as both “a statement of national pride” and “a legacy for future generations.”
Bonnici also linked the project to Malta’s cultural vision and ongoing restoration efforts at the Maritime Museum, reaffirming that “our heritage is not only a reflection of our past but a foundation for our future.”
Special recognition went to Daniel Cuschieri, whose idea sparked the initiative, and to Professor Victor Grech, the book’s Chief Editor. The first copy will be auctioned to support Maltese NGOs, a gesture that fuses national pride with philanthropy.
The evening concluded with the unveiling of the Malta Opus Timepiece, a limited edition of 1,565 pieces, a timeless tribute to Malta’s enduring spirit.
