The Incredible Story Behind Malta’s Santa Marija Convoy

For many Maltese, Santa Marija is synonymous with festas, family and a mid-August break, but 15th August also marks the anniversary of one of the most significant moments in Malta’s wartime history.

In August 1942, Malta was under siege. Food, fuel and ammunition were desperately low as Axis forces attempted to cut off the strategically important island.

Enter Operation Pedestal.

The British-led operation saw a heavily escorted convoy attempt the incredibly dangerous journey from Gibraltar to Malta, carrying supplies the island urgently needed.

The convoy came under relentless attacks from aircraft, submarines and other enemy forces, suffering devastating losses along the way.

Among the vessels was the American tanker SS Ohio, carrying vital fuel. After sustaining severe damage, the tanker was eventually supported by Royal Navy destroyers as it made its way towards Malta.

On 15th August 1942, the battered Ohio entered Valletta’s Grand Harbour to an extraordinary welcome.

Its arrival on the Feast of the Assumption gave the convoy a name that remains familiar to generations of Maltese: Il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija, the Santa Marija Convoy.

The supplies delivered through Operation Pedestal provided desperately needed relief and helped Malta continue resisting during one of the darkest periods of the Second World War.

More than eight decades later, Santa Marija therefore carries another significance alongside the celebrations, remembering the extraordinary sacrifice behind a convoy that fought its way across the Mediterranean to reach Malta.
