The First Eight Projects Funded By The Aquaculture Fund Have Been Approved

Malta’s aquaculture sector is set to receive a fresh boost as Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, announced the first eight projects to benefit from the newly established Aquaculture Fund.
A total of €80,000 will be invested in six beneficiaries, marking the first round of funding following this year’s call for applications.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture evaluated ten proposals submitted by educational institutions, including MCAST, and several NGOs.
The selected projects focus on environmental awareness, inspiring children to explore future careers in the sector, and strengthening Malta’s blue economy through innovation.
Bugeja Said highlighted that the fund is creating real opportunities for sustainability and creative development within aquaculture and the marine environment.
She emphasised the strong commitment shown by NGOs, community groups, and educators in protecting marine ecosystems and promoting responsible growth.
Acting Director General Bjorn Azzopardi explained that the fund was established after 2023 legal amendments, directing part of annual aquaculture permit fees into a pool that finances projects of up to €10,000 over two years.
The approved initiatives include campaigns, studies, and educational efforts led by groups such as Coast is Clear Foundation, Nature Trust, Żibel, MCAST, and local band clubs, each contributing toward a more environmentally responsible future for Malta’s seas.
