The second a bit of rain hits Malta, the roads suddenly become a completely different universe. And somehow, every single type of person comes out at once. Here are a few you’re guaranteed to spot.

1. The Guy On A Motorcycle In Shorts And A T-Shirt: It’s pouring. The road is soaked. Visibility is questionable. But technically, it’s still summer. So there he is, riding through the rain in shorts and a T-shirt like nothing has happened.

2. The Person Who Thinks It’s Already Mid-January: One shower and suddenly the hoodie is out. Sometimes even the beanie. Meanwhile, it’s still around 25°C and humid enough to make you regret wearing it approximately three minutes later.

3. The Rainy Day Playlist Driver: The second the first raindrop hits the windscreen, the playlist changes. Sad songs. Slow songs. Main-character music. Suddenly the drive from Mosta to Sliema feels like the final scene of a film.

4. The Super-Fast Wiper Person: The rain is barely falling. But their wipers are operating at a speed normally reserved for a tropical storm. You can practically hear them from the next lane.

5. The Person Driving At 20km/h: A small amount of rain appears and they immediately decide every road in Malta has turned into an ice rink. Technically safe. Slightly frustrating when you’re stuck behind them.

6. The Person Driving Like It’s Completely Dry: Then there’s the exact opposite. Heavy rain, wet roads, huge puddles — absolutely no change in driving style whatsoever. Same speed. Same following distance. Same confidence.

7. The Professional Puddle Avoider: They’ve memorised every flood-prone road in Malta. Every puddle is treated like a strategic obstacle. Left. Right. Brake. Accelerate. Basically a rally stage, but in Birkirkara.

8. The Person Who Drives Straight Through The Biggest Puddle: Usually next to a pedestrian. No hesitation. Just one massive splash and somebody’s entire day ruined.

9. The Window-Fogging Victim: They got into the car soaking wet, the windows immediately fogged up and now they’re pressing every button on the dashboard hoping one of them fixes it. Eventually, something works.

10. The Person Posting The Rain On Instagram: Before they even leave the parking spot: “Finally" Ten minutes later, stuck in traffic: “Malta cannot handle rain.” Because nothing brings Maltese people together quite like the first proper rainy day after summer.
