The Capital Derby Between Valletta and Floriana Returns To Malta’s Top Flight

The historic and renowned Capital Derby between two of Malta’s most decorated clubs and fiercest rivals, Valletta and Floriana, makes its long-awaited return to the Premier League tonight.
This will be the first league clash between the sides in 529 days, following Valletta’s one-season spell in the second division.
Both teams have started the new campaign brightly. Floriana opened with victories over Naxxar Lions and Tarxien Rainbows before being held to a draw by Gżira United, while Valletta registered back-to-back draws against Birkirkara and reigning champions Ħamrun Spartans, before celebrating their first win back in the top flight against Marsaxlokk.
A packed crowd is expected at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium, with Valletta’s West C stand already sold out, limited tickets still available in the South Stand, and Floriana’s West A section close to full capacity.
Floriana head coach Daniel Portela played down the occasion while recognising its importance, telling the press:
“All teams are tough, and every game is different. This is a historic derby, but at the end of the day it’s still only three points. We know Valletta are a strong side, but we must fight harder than we did in our last match against Gżira. I hope our performance in this game will be better. The result is important for the fans, but there are still many matches left. The mental side is even more important than the physical, especially with recovery being tough when we play every three days. This match against Valletta is a new challenge for us, and I hope we can achieve a positive result.”
Valletta head coach Thane Micallef, meanwhile, stressed the motivation his team is drawing from their supporters:
“After our performances against Birkirkara and Ħamrun, we became more determined, and that grit helped us secure a well-deserved three points against Marsaxlokk. It was an important win. On Tuesday it’s just our fourth match, but we understand the value a match against Floriana carries for our fans. Their support gives us extra motivation to deliver another strong performance. I want to thank our fans who were always behind us last season, and now it’s time for us to repay them with good performances and positive results, starting tomorrow.”
