That’s A Wrap: Malta’s Summer Festa Season Is Coming To An End

And just like that, another Maltese summer tradition is wrapping up.

After months of fireworks, marching bands, street decorations, packed village squares and more ġelat than anyone would like to admit, Malta’s traditional summer festa season is officially coming to an end.

From May onwards, practically every weekend has brought with it another locality dressed in its colours, streets filled with festa enthusiasts and the unmistakable sound of fireworks echoing across the island.

September traditionally marks the final stretch.

The Feast of Our Lady of Graces in Ħaż-Żabbar, celebrated on 13th September this year, is widely regarded as one of the last major festas of the Maltese summer season.

And while Malta’s official feast calendar certainly doesn’t stop there, with celebrations still scheduled in ĦalKirkop, Valletta, Victoria, Marsa and Mellieħa later this month, the packed run of summer village festas is now winding down.

For many Maltese people, festas are about much more than just one weekend.

They mean weeks of preparation, band club rivalry, volunteers decorating streets, families gathering together and communities celebrating traditions passed down through generations.

They’re also one of those unmistakable signs of a Maltese summer: warm nights, crowded pjazez, food stalls, brass bands and fireworks lighting up the sky.

So as September moves on and autumn officially approaches, another festa season starts making way for quieter weekends.

At least until next year, when the first fireworks of summer remind us that festa season has started all over again.
