TCNs Share Videos Of Their Journey Back Home After Budget 2027 Measures

Several third-country nationals (TCNs) have taken to social media to share videos of their journeys back to their home countries, following the announcement of new measures affecting foreign workers in Malta.
The videos come just days after Finance Minister Clyde Caruana announced a series of changes during the Budget 2027 speech on Monday, 26th October.
Among the measures announced was the removal of free public transport for TCNs who do not hold long-term residency, meaning affected individuals will have to pay €33 per month to use buses and ferries.
Other changes include a new €83 monthly driving licence charge for certain foreign residents, increased employment-related fees and the removal of free childcare eligibility for TCNs who are not long-term residents.
The announcements have sparked widespread discussion across social media, particularly among foreign workers concerned about the rising cost of living and working in Malta.
Now, videos showing TCNs travelling back to their countries of origin have added another dimension to the conversation.
The proposals have also attracted criticism from organisations representing foreign workers, who argue that the additional costs could place significant financial pressure on individuals already contributing to Malta's economy.
With the measures expected to come into effect in 2027, the debate continues over their potential impact on Malta's foreign workforce.
