If you're a gin and tonic lover, today might just be your favourite Monday of the year!

October 19 marks International Gin & Tonic Day, an annual celebration dedicated to one of the world's most iconic cocktails.

And let's face it, here in Malta, there's something about enjoying an ice-cold G&T by the sea or during a sunset catch-up with friends that just hits differently.

But did you know that the popular drink actually has a fascinating history?

The gin and tonic's origins are closely linked to British colonial India, where quinine, the bitter ingredient associated with tonic water, was used to combat malaria. Over time, gin and tonic evolved from its medicinal associations into the refreshing cocktail enjoyed worldwide today.

International Gin & Tonic Day itself has a rather touching story. The celebration was established in memory of Mary Edith Keyburn, a devoted gin and tonic enthusiast who passed away on October 19, 2010, aged 95.

And Malta certainly knows how to appreciate a good G&T!

From the bars of St Julian's to the quieter seaside spots across Malta and Gozo, the gin and tonic has become a familiar choice for Maltese people.

Whether you prefer yours with cucumber, a slice of lemon, a sprig of rosemary or simply plenty of ice, there's no shortage of ways to enjoy this timeless classic.

Are you a gin and tonic lover, or would you rather order something else? Enjoy responsibly.
