Labour MP Nigel Vella has reflected on his journey towards completing a law degree, saying the achievement represents a personal milestone after years of balancing his studies with work, family and political commitments.

Vella, who was elected to Parliament in the 2026 general election, said he is set to graduate for the second time in November, 14 years after completing his first degree.

In a lengthy statement, Vella recalled beginning a law course at university in 2007, but leaving after failing his first year twice.

He later completed a Bachelor’s degree in History in 2012, before becoming involved full-time in the Labour Party’s communications office.

He said the desire to complete his law degree remained with him for years, eventually returning to the course four years ago after encouragement from family and friends.

During those four years, Vella said he got married, became a father, worked on a European Parliament election campaign and contested the 2026 general election, while continuing his professional and other commitments.

He described completing the course as a moment of personal perseverance and encouraged others not to give up on their ambitions, saying: “Where there is will, there is strength.”
