Study Shows Most Maltese People Do Not Trust Political Parties Or Government

A new Eurobarometer study published on Friday reveals that two-thirds of Maltese citizens lack trust in political parties, with fewer than half expressing trust in the government or Malta’s parliament.

However, the findings point to a notable improvement compared to the previous survey earlier this year, reflecting a shift in public sentiment.

The survey shows growing optimism about the country’s direction, with nearly half of respondents now believing Malta is heading the right way—a 13-point increase since spring.

Additionally, a third expect the national situation to improve over the next year, a 15-point rise.

Public positivity about Malta’s overall state is also on the rise. Over half (56%) believe the situation in Malta is good, 68% rate the economy positively, and 84% consider their household’s financial situation to be good.

Although trust in Maltese politics remains relatively low, it has seen a significant upturn. Trust in political parties has risen by 17 points to 34%, while trust in the government climbed 11 points to 47%. Satisfaction with democracy has also improved, rising 14 points to 54%.
