Primary school pupils from St Nicholas College have inaugurated the newly refurbished garden adjacent to their school, which has been enhanced for their enjoyment as well as for the benefit of local residents.

In an event organised by Ambjent Malta and the Attard Local Council, the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise, Miriam Dalli, joined the students to officially open Ġnien il-Palma.

The garden’s transformation was made possible through the “Greening Urban Areas” initiative.

Minister Dalli remarked that families and children remain at the heart of the Government’s work, noting that this project is another example of how investment in open spaces is being returned to the community.

“As highlighted in the recently announced Budget, where the environment once again received a significant allocation, the Government’s commitment towards a greener future is clear. We continue to work on a variety of open space projects — always thoughtfully, always for the people to ensure that communities have access to places where they can enjoy nature and the tranquillity it provides,” said Minister Dalli.

Ġnien il-Palma was selected by the Attard Local Council to serve as a community hub and provide an open space for local activities. Through this project, the area underwent extensive improvements.

Among the key upgrades were the installation of cycling infrastructure, eco-friendly furniture made from recyclable materials, and new children’s play equipment. The entire lighting system was replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting, and several measures were introduced to improve accessibility and safety.

The garden’s landscaping was also completely renewed. Invasive plants were removed and replaced with indigenous species, enhancing both the visual appeal and ecological value of the space.

“These interventions by Ambjent Malta enhance the garden’s visual appeal and make it more accessible to the public. One of our main objectives is to improve the urban environment and create ecological corridors that support local biodiversity,” said Josianne Muscat, Director of the Projects Department within Ambjent Malta.

The “Greening Urban Areas” initiative encourages Local Councils across Malta and Gozo to implement projects that integrate green infrastructure into urban environments. Its main goal is to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of communities, particularly in densely populated and commercially active areas.
