Strong Winds Expected To Hit The Maltese Islands
Local

The coming days will be dominated by strong and at times very strong northwesterly winds, with unsettled conditions persisting through the weekend.

Westerly to northwesterly winds began strengthening on Wednesday, 7th January, prompting a Meteorological Office warning, particularly for coastal areas where the strongest winds are expected.

This warning is likely to be renewed in the days ahead.

The unsettled weather is linked to a low-pressure system over southern Italy, slowly moving eastwards across the Mediterranean.

On Thursday, 8th January, winds are forecast to strengthen further, reaching Force 6 to 7, accompanied by isolated showers throughout the day.

Some improvement is expected between Friday and Saturday, with sunny intervals returning. However, conditions will remain windy.

On Friday, 9th January, west-southwesterly winds are expected to reach Force 5 to 6, strengthening further on Saturday, 10 January, as they veer back to a west-northwesterly direction and reach Force 6.

Sunday is expected to be the most unsettled and windy day, with showers and very strong northwesterly winds once again reaching Force 6 to 7.

Isolated showers are expected to hit over the weekend.

This will be driven by another low-pressure system moving from the British Isles towards the Baltic states.

Temperatures are set to fall, with daytime highs between 16°C and 14°C and overnight lows ranging from 12°C to 10°C, feeling colder due to the persistent winds.
