Still Below Average Rainfall For 2024-25 In Malta

The 2024–2025 precipitation year in Malta recorded below-average rainfall, but it marked a significant improvement compared with the severe drought of the previous year.
Between September 2024 and August 2025, a total of 457.8 mm of rain fell, 87.5 mm below the long-term average of 545.3 mm.
While still drier than normal, this represents 208 mm more rainfall than the 2023–2024 year, which had only 249.8 mm and was the second driest on record.
A month-by-month review shows that eight months were drier than average. October 2024 was particularly disappointing, with just 4.2 mm of rain recorded, falling 73.4 mm short of the monthly quota.

By contrast, February, March, May and August experienced above-average rainfall, helping to offset some of the year’s deficit. March contributed 81 mm of rainfall, 41.3 mm above its quota, while May added 36.6 mm, 26.4 mm above its monthly norm.
Seasonally, winter was the wettest period with 201 mm of rain, followed by spring with 121.2 mm and autumn with 124.8 mm. Summer remained very dry, with all 10.8 mm of rain falling in August.
The wettest single day occurred on 25 March, when 34.4 mm of rain fell across the Islands. Station data showed Msida recorded the highest annual total at 450.4 mm, while Xewkija measured the lowest at 324.0 mm. Overall, the year offered relief from last year’s extreme drought.
