St Paul's Catacombs Awarded European Heritage Label

St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat have been awarded the European Heritage Label, marking a historic first for Malta.
The announcement was made by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici together with Heritage Malta.
It is the first time a Maltese site has received the prestigious recognition, which highlights places that have played a significant role in shaping Europe’s history and identity.
The European Heritage Label forms part of the European Commission’s Creative Europe framework and is awarded to sites that contribute to a better understanding of Europe’s shared past.
This year, 13 sites across the continent were selected.
Minister Bonnici said the recognition reflects Malta’s deep historical roots while demonstrating a forward looking commitment to cultural responsibility and sustainable growth.
European Commissioner Glenn Micallef described such heritage sites as living classrooms that connect younger generations to Europe’s shared foundations.
St Paul’s Catacombs represent Malta’s largest burial complex from the classical period.
Used during Punic, Roman and Byzantine times, the site includes Jewish, polytheistic and Christian burials within the same cemetery.
This offers some of the earliest material evidence in Europe of religious coexistence, diversity and freedom of belief.
Heritage Malta said the award strengthens the site’s role within the wider European cultural landscape and reinforces ongoing efforts to preserve and promote its historical significance for future generations.
