St Edward’s College, which falls under the responsibility of the Lands Authority, has been granted a 65-year long-term lease.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said this step provides long-term stability for the institution while allowing further investment in its facilities and continued development.

St Edward’s College is one of Malta’s most established and respected schools. Located in Birgu, it was founded in 1929 with the aim of providing high-quality education.

The private institution currently educates around 670 students and offers a full academic pathway from primary to secondary level. It also operates a residential system for students aged eleven and over, who are able to live at the college during the school year.

The college today welcomes students from 38 different countries, which contributes to its strong international character. It is known for its discipline, strong values and commitment to the overall development of its students.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said the 65-year lease is more than an administrative measure.

He described it as a clear investment in stability, continuity and the future of education in Malta. He explained that the agreement gives the college the certainty it needs to plan ahead, improve its facilities and adapt to modern educational requirements.

He also highlighted recent government investment across the education sector, including agreements covering State, Church and independent schools, as well as an agreement for academic staff at the University of Malta.

Support for independent schools has been strengthened, recognising their role within the wider education system. Additional investment, including a €27 million programme over five years, is aimed at helping institutions maintain quality while remaining accessible and sustainable.

Minister Owen Bonnici said the agreement will help safeguard an institution of both historical and educational importance. He noted that it provides a solid foundation for the college to continue improving its services while preserving its heritage.

The college has a long history, originally built in 1878 as the Cottonera Military Hospital. It was converted into a school in 1929 and has since grown into a modern educational institution with updated academic and sports facilities.

The agreement was signed by the Lands Authority Chief Executive Robert Vella together with representatives of St Edward’s College.
