St Andrews Farm has shared an informative video explaining how the Maltese Christmas gulbiena is grown.

Gulbiena is a traditional Maltese Christmas decoration made from light-deprived vetch seeds, which are cultivated to produce lush white sprouts.

St Andrews Farm noted: “These sprouts are used to decorate cribs and nativity scenes, and are sometimes displayed as general Christmas decorations in homes and churches.”

In the video, they explain how easy gulbiena is to grow: soak the vetch seeds in water overnight until they are plump; place the seeds on a bed of damp peat in a container; store the container in a dark place; keep it moist; and wait for growth. It typically takes around two to three weeks for the seeds to develop into fully-formed white sprouts.
