Special Olympics Malta Partners With Chinese Embassy Ahead Of European Swimming Open

Special Olympics Malta has marked another milestone ahead of the Special Olympics European Swimming Open Malta 2026, signing a partnership agreement with the Chinese Embassy in Malta.

The agreement comes just weeks before the Games, which will see around 400 athletes from 37 nations travel to Malta this September.

Dr Lydia Abela, President of Special Olympics Malta, welcomed the collaboration, stressing the importance of ensuring that athletes with intellectual disabilities are given the same opportunities and recognition as others. She also expressed hope that the partnership would extend beyond sport into areas including health advocacy and education.

Ambassador Zhang praised the work of Special Olympics Malta, describing the upcoming competition as an opportunity to promote inclusion across Europe and beyond.

The Special Olympics European Swimming Open Malta 2026 will be Malta’s second major international Special Olympics event, giving swimmers with intellectual disabilities the chance to compete on an international stage.

Beyond the competition, the event will also feature programmes including Healthy Athletes screenings, promoting health, wellbeing and inclusion.

The Games will take place from 10th to 14th September at the National Pool Complex in Tal-Qroqq.
