Special Olympics European Swimming Open 2026 Officially Begins In Malta

The Special Olympics European Swimming Open 2026 has officially got underway in Malta for the first time, welcoming 400 athletes from 37 countries.

The competition was declared open by Special Olympics Malta President Dr Lydia Abela during an opening ceremony at the National Swimming Pool Complex in Tal-Qroqq.

Abela, alongside Special Olympics Malta Brand Ambassador and athlete Neil Agius, also led the Maltese delegation during the traditional athletes’ parade.

In her speech, Abela described the event as a historic moment for Special Olympics Malta, highlighting the movement’s recovery following the challenges of the pandemic and its development since 2022.

She said the Games promote inclusion and demonstrate that athletes can overcome challenges and limitations, while creating opportunities that extend beyond sport into schools, workplaces and communities.

Other speakers included European Commissioner Glenn Micallef, Special Olympics Europe Eurasia President Sven Albrecht and Global Ambassador Gilmour Borg.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Ministers Julia Farrugia and Byron Camilleri, whose ministries supported the event through Aġenzija Sapport and SportMalta.
