Speaker of the House of Representatives Carmelo Abela has held separate meetings with representatives of the Friends of the National Archives and the General Workers’ Union (GWU), discussing Malta’s historical heritage and workers’ wellbeing.

During the meeting with the Friends of the National Archives, Abela acknowledged the organisation’s work in raising awareness of historical documents held at the National Archives. He highlighted their importance in preserving Malta’s national identity and documenting the country’s constitutional, democratic and parliamentary development.

The discussion also emphasised the value of cooperation between Parliament and the National Archives to preserve historical records and make them more accessible to the public and future generations.

In his meeting with the GWU, discussions focused on the union’s role in protecting the interests of Maltese and foreign workers, improving working conditions and maintaining industrial peace. The collective agreement covering 2025 to 2030, which introduced improvements to the conditions of parliamentary employees, was also discussed.

Particular attention was given to workers’ mental health, wellbeing and work-life balance, with both sides agreeing on the need to take these issues more seriously.

Abela also stressed the importance of mutual respect in parliamentary debate and making Parliament more accessible through social media and meetings with communities, schools and institutions.
